I used “Lumio by SMART” to create an educational game. Lumio allows teachers to integrate technology into their lessons and have students learn in interactive ways. Lumio also allows for more class participation by encouraging students to work independently on their own devices.
I created a racing game to help grade 6 students prepare for their social studies’ provincial exam. You are asked a series of questions, if you get the question correct, you get a boost. If you get the question incorrect, you do not. The faster you answer the question, the bigger the boost you get. Students can play on their own devices against their peers. If you wanted to play this game on the smartboard, as a class, students could get into teams and answer the questions collaboratively. Working together would allow students to share what they know with one another. This game makes studying a lot more fun and entertaining. It also allows students to play against their friends, allowing students to tap into their competitive side.
The one problem I had while creating this game, was that there was a maximum word count on the questions. This inhibited me from asking some longer questions. It also was difficult to add pictures for sources, but overall, the creation of the game was straightforward.
Using smart software in a classroom setting allows teachers to create numerous collaborative activities, such as fill-in-the-blanks or games. Teachers could also create assessments and instantly get feedback on the level of each student’s knowledge and understanding. Students can use their mobile devices, or laptops in the classroom to respond to instruction. Educators can also use SMART technology to go on virtual field trips.
After exploring Lumio, I am comfortable creating interactive lessons, and educational games. I also see the value of using technologies like this to keep students engaged and make learning fun. Although I recognize I still have a lot more to learn, and as technology continues to advance, I must continue to learn about different ways to integrate technology into the classroom.
